Community Catchment Plan
Working together for the river
& catchment area
The Nyfer am Byth project is committed to creating a sustainable future for our community through the development of a Community Catchment Management Plan.
By using the principles of co-production, we’re ensuring that this plan is shaped collaboratively, bringing together the ideas, insights, and values of everyone who calls the area home. Co-production means going beyond simply consulting the community; it means working alongside you at every step to create solutions that reflect the needs, knowledge, and aspirations of all.
Why is this approach essential? A thriving and resilient environment benefits everyone, and every voice matters in shaping its future. By including farmers, residents, local businesses, conservation groups, and young people in the planning process, we’re making sure the plan respects our shared priorities and values. When everyone has a say, the plan becomes stronger, more adaptable, and reflective of the community’s diversity.

Summary of the Afon Nyfer Community Catchment Management Plan
The Afon Nyfer Community Catchment Plan is a community-led response to growing concerns about the ecological health of the Afon Nyfer and its surrounding landscape.
Developed between 2024 and 2025 through wide-ranging consultation, the plan reflects the voices, priorities, and insights of residents, landowners, schools, and local organisations across the catchment—from Crymych to Newport.
At its core, the plan recognises the river’s deep cultural, ecological, and economic value. It outlines the current pressures on the catchment, particularly agricultural pollution, sewage spills, biodiversity loss, and erosion of cultural identity, and identifies clear, practical actions for reversing these trends.
Five key priorities emerged from the consultation:
-
Reducing pollution from agriculture and sewage
-
Raising awareness and education at all levels of the community
-
Enhancing biodiversity and creating wildlife corridors
-
Improving access and enjoyment of the river and its landscape
-
Celebrating and supporting Welsh language, culture, and community resilience
