Safe to Swim? Saff i Nofio?
Water quality in the Nyfer catchment can change quickly. After periods of heavy rain, surface run-off from roads, farmland and fields, combined with storm overflows from sewage systems, can lead to a sharp rise in pollution levels in the river and bay. This makes local bathing waters – particularly at Traeth Mawr, Newport – more vulnerable to contaminants like bacteria, nitrates and slurry.
This pollution risk can last for up to 72 hours, even if the weather has improved. It is especially important to check conditions before swimming, paddling, or letting dogs or children play in the water.
